How to Change a User's Role

Change a user's role in Settings to immediately adjust what they can access and do in Precision.

Who can change roles

Only owners and admins have access to Settings. Admins can assign roles below admin level. Only owners can promote someone to admin or owner.

The four roles

  • Owner — full control over the account, including billing and ownership transfer

  • Admin — can manage users and settings; cannot promote someone to their own level or above

  • Member — can view and edit data and reports

How to change a role

  1. Go to Settings in the main navigation.

  2. Select the Users tab.

  3. Find the user you want to update and click the ... menu on the right.

  4. Select Edit role.

  5. Choose the new role from the dropdown and click Save Changes.

The change takes effect immediately. The user will have their new permissions on their next action — no re-login required.

What changes right away

Access is enforced at the API level, so the role change is instant. A user demoted from admin loses access to Settings immediately. A user promoted to admin can access Settings on their next page load.

Edge cases to know

  • Owners cannot demote themselves. If you are the only owner, you cannot change your own role. Promote someone else to owner first.

  • One active owner required. The account must always have at least one active owner. The system will block any change that would leave the account without one.

  • Inactive users. You can deactivate a user at the same time you change their role using the Active Status toggle in the Edit User dialog.
